The programme PROTA is an initiative of Wageningen University, Netherlands. In cooperation with institutes in Africa and Europe, the programme intends to survey, compile, edit, publish and disseminate existing knowledge on some 7000 useful plants of Tropical Africa. It will build on the experiences gained by the twin-programme PROSEA, short for: Plant Resources of South East Asia (1985-2002). In due course the publications will be accessible from this Internet address.

The preparatory phase of PROTA has taken 3 years (2000-2002). During this phase the focus has been on:

• BASELIST (Basic list of species and commodity grouping)
• PROTA Network
• Precursor
• PROTA 2: ‘Vegetables’
• Board of Trustees
• First PROTA International Workshop.
• Regional Officers Meeting 2002
• Search the PROTA Information Base

The publications will appear in the course of the implementation phase of the programme running from 2003-2010.
